Virgil Abloh's Mercedes-Benz "G-Wagon"
Virgil Abloh and luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz have teamed up to create a new iteration of the G-Class. Titled “Project Geländewagen,” this unprecedented collaboration is turning a lot of heads and garnering a lot of attention. In this article, we are going to give a brief rundown of the collaboration.
The G-Class, more famously known as the G-Wagon, has been one of the most glamourized cars in popular culture. From music video cameos to celebrity red carpet appearances, this car has been weaved in and out of popular culture over the years. Abloh’s rendition of the car is lower and wider than the traditional G-Wagon. The side mirrors and door handles are shaved off, and the interior of the vehicle is designed to resemble a race car.
Abloh explained in the “Project Geländewagen” promotional video, “The idea of the paint is unique in that it runs away from the idea of perfection. The finish is typically like the underlining of a car. The idea here is to embrace the human touch.”
This stays on track with Abloh’s deconstructed design philosophy that we see when he creates other products. The car is more of a display of art than a functioning vehicle. “Project Geländewagen” is a project to showcase the collaboration between two worlds and two brands. A 1:3 scaled version of the vehicle will be auctioned off for close to $100,000.
